China scapegoated by U.S. toy-maker Mattel

On Sep. 21, U.S.-based Mattel, the world’s largest toy-maker, was forced to apologize to the Chinese government and take responsibility for the recall of 19.6 million Chinese-manufactured toys this year.

The U.S. media, acting as the mouthpiece of imperialism, seized the opportunity of the toy recalls to viciously attack China.

However, of the near 20 million recalled toys, 17.4 million (88.9 percent) were recalled because they contained small magnets that can be easily removed and swallowed by children, a design flaw solely attributable to Mattel. A design problem will result in an unsafe toy regardless of where it is manufactured.

Of the 550 recalls since 1988 of Chinese-made toys, 76.4 percent came about because of design-related problems. Manufacturing defects caused less than 10 percent.

This shows that the anti-China attacks focusing on product recalls are highly hypocritical and politically motivated. The government and media are quite forgiving of U.S. companies’ shortcomings, but they will seize any opportunity to demonize independent countries.
