Community fights for school admission for child of same-sex couple

A Colorado community is fighting against a homophobic decision not to re-enroll a preschooler at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic school because of the sexual orientation of the student’s parents. The Archdiocese of Denver admits that it denied the kindergarten student admission solely because her parents are lesbians.

The Church’s decision has been met by a struggle for fair treatment. Families rallied outside Sunday mass to take a stand against intolerance and homophobia. Parents circulated a petition opposing the Church’s decision. Many are considering withdrawing their children from the school.

The state of Colorado has also denied legitimacy to same-sex couples under its homophobic anti-marriage law. Signed into law in 2000, the Colorado same-sex marriage ban superseded an anti-gay amendment to the state constitution, which had been deemed unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Full equality requires a determined fight against every manifestation of anti-LGBT bigotry, including the odious federal Defense of Marriage Act. Full rights for LGBT people now!
