Democrat-turned-Independent Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut recently introduced the “Terrorist Expatriation Act.” The bill would strip the citizenship of anyone suspected of supporting an organization that “fights against our country.”
The biggest threat to civil liberties is the intentionally vague qualification “fighting against our country.” This leaves the door open to widespread attacks on anyone that challenges the status quo. Muslims and Arab-Americans would be especially affected by this measure.
By revoking the citizenship of those simply accused of violating the law’s dubious terms, Senator Lieberman is effectively nullifying the principle of “innocent until proven guilty.”
The real enemies of poor and working people can be found at home. We must reject this draconian bill and stand up to the Wall Street billionaires that are undeniably guilty of fighting against our class.
