Socialist candidate for Calif. Gov. vows to reimburse state workers

Carlos Alvarez is the Peace and Freedom candidate running for Calif. Governor. He is also a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

On Oct. 3, the California Supreme Court unanimously upheld unpaid furloughs forced upon more than 200,000 state employees last fiscal year. Socialist candidate for Governor, Carlos Alvarez, condemns the Supreme Court ruling and promises to pay full reimbursement for wages lost by state employees in the past year.

Alvarez said, “The ruling that prevents future governors from unilaterally imposing wage cuts, like Schwarzenegger did last year, is a victory. But this ruling comes at the price of the state workers’ lost wages because every facet of the capitalist state, including the court system, is in the service of the ruling class of capitalist owners by carrying out the systematic repression of workers.

“I am a worker and I am running for governor to fight for my class. As such, I will fully reimburse the more than 200,000 state workers who were forced to accept cuts. More than this however, I will extend the right to unionize to all workers and I will guard state workers’ pensions because every worker has should have a right to a pension.”

If elected, Alvarez will tax rich corporations, big oil, and banks so that workers in California can gain actual rights to a union job, home, healthcare, education, and a pension.
