Escondido residents speak up against eviction

Press release issued by the Party for Socialism and Liberation in collaboration with Escondido residents.

Escondido residents are being evicted from their home and sued by the City of Escondido. If this eviction goes forward, the City of Escondido will knowingly be making these residents homeless, some of whom have medical conditions that could prove fatal if not properly cared for.

On May 26 at 6 p.m., Escondido residents will be holding a press conference to counter the concerted effort by the City of Escondido — as well as mainstream media — to demonize them and evict them from their home. The residents will be joined by members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation and the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment. They are demanding an immediate stop to their forceful eviction as well as the unnecessary and vengeful lawsuit the City of Escondido is subjecting them to, and a correcting of the record by local media who have brazenly established a fictional narrative in order to create a bias within the community.

Several articles have been published about these residents, painting them as criminals, but few attempted to share their real story. There are human beings behind these news articles, living in a system that constantly punishes them for trying to survive. The real crime is that homelessness is rampant in the richest country on this planet, and yet we continue to ruthlessly kick people out of their homes during a pandemic.

“When I lost my wife, I went out on my own and however my past brought me here, I have never squatted anywhere in my life … I’m not doing anything wrong. On the contrary, I believe I am helping a lot of people.”

Steve Kukuk, resident

“It’s embarrassing. I’ve read some of the comments that people have been posting and they make us sound like savages. We’re not trying to be rebellious or confrontational or anything, we’re just trying to function. If there is something we should be doing or could be doing…just tell us.”
