Harlem opposes a new war on Iraq

As a part of the national days of action against the impending war in Iraq and the day after Obama announced he would send military advisers into Iraq, New York City’s ANSWER Coalition organized a demonstration in front of an Armed Forces Career Center in Harlem.

About 50 people participated in the picket line in front of the recruitment center and marched with ANSWER NY to the state building in Harlem. The Revolutionary Student Coordinating Committee and other local activists joined the opposition to a new war on Iraq. Local Harlem residents agreed with our message stating “That’s right! There shouldn’t be any more war.”

Harlem resident Jackie stated that “they are looking for oil to make money for themselves; that has nothing to do with me!”

As part of the action, ANSWER created signs with sentence starters and asked people to take pictures to show their support with the Iraqi people and voice their dissent with a new war on Iraq. Some sentences included:

“I oppose a new war on Iraq because…

…take care of us first, we need [to] help our children.

…we need jobs and a better educational system here in the U.S.

…my people need jobs!

…I oppose children dying to make a rich man richer.”

Overall, the community demands recognize that this new war on Iraq would be for continued oil, profit, and control and not for the benefit of the Iraqi people. Harlem stands in solidarity with the Iraqi people who are resisting another imperialist intervention.
