Jersey Shore Food Not Bombs Fights Gentrification, Defends Homeless

Food Not Bombs activists offer free healthy vegetarian meals to people in the beach resort city of Asbury Park, NJ, every Sunday at 4:30 PM.

“Initially we picked this location since there is a lack of healthy food in this area,” said Marissa Pardue of Food Not Bombs. “There’s no food store in this area and only fast food chains.”

Ranked as a top beach destination in the state, Asbury Park is undergoing tremendous gentrification pushing residents out of the town which is over half African American. Residents of the community around the bus terminal on Main Street in Asbury Park took advantage of the food provided by Food Not Bombs and appreciate their work.

“We also want to promote the message to stop government spending on military defense and to use that money for housing and food,” said Pardue.

Food Not Bombs held a rally in nearby Lakewood, NJ on June 2 to defend “Tent City”, an encampment of several dozen homeless people. All residents were evicted from the encampment on June 1. The encampment grew to well over 100 residents at one point over the last seven years. To get involved in providing healthy food or defending the Lakewood Tent City contact: [email protected]
