Sacramento Regional Transit: Drop G4S!

Sacramento Regional Transit (RT), recently under fire by the public for its outrageous proposed fare increase, is also being criticized for contracting out for private security at the cost of $4+ million a year, to multinational G4S, a corporation that is profiting from human rights violations around the world.

G4S’s complicity with human rights violations was brought to RT’s attention in September 2015. As of February, over sixty organizations and hundreds of individuals have asked RT to end its contract with G4S which is set to expire in June unless the RT board extends it. To date, RT has taken no action on its G4S contract.

At least 50 people attended the January 11 RT meeting to support RT’s ending its contract with G4S. In response to the public’s concerns, the RT board appointed a committee at its January 11 to look into RT’s contraction selection policies and criteria.Documentation has been provided to RT that it can and should screen contractors for social responsibility concerns like respecting human rights.

G4S workers on RT are not unionized and do not receive the same pay or benefits as RT employees.

Members of the public are asked to attend the February 22, 2106, 6pm Board meeting at 1400, 29th Street, Sacramento to again ask RT to drop its contract with G4S.
