State senator backs PSL candidate for NYC mayor

State Senator Julia Salazar, representing New York State’s District 18, has endorsed socialist candidate Cathy Rojas for mayor of New York City. Salazar calls on others to support Rojas and her struggle-oriented program.

According to Senator Salazar, “Cathy Rojas is the bold leader that everyday New Yorkers deserve to have representing them in City Hall. Cathy has dedicated herself not only to public service, but also to fighting to dismantle systems of oppression.

“Rooted in her own lived experiences as a working-class public school teacher, Cathy has demonstrated her commitment to empowering our most vulnerable neighbors.

‘It’s crucial that we challenge political hegemony by supporting Cathy: an inspiring, socialist candidate who is running to truly be the voice for the people.”

Both Rojas and Salazar call for a rent-controlled city that allows tenants to remain permanently and safely in their homes; an end to racist police brutality and a reallocation of NYPD funds to social services that care for communities; jobs with livable wages guaranteed to all people; healthcare as a right, not a business opportunity.

Senator Salazar, whose state congressional district includes much of northern Brooklyn, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Rojas is a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Both women see capitalism as inherently oppressive and exploitative, as it prioritizes profits over people. They favor a social system where working people hold the economic and political levers of power.

According to Rojas, “The people most affected by the problems of policing, school segregation, hunger, evictions and mounting debts should be the people providing the solutions. My campaign is about unleashing the solutions for what we know works and building power from the ground up. There’s no limit to what we can achieve when the workers have power.”

The Cathy Rojas for Mayor campaign is fighting for a socialist platform that has outlined a realistic way the city resources can be used to meet the needs of New Yorkers by providing jobs and small business relief, defunding the police, upgrading and protecting NYCHA, fighting for full rights for immigrants, creating truly affordable housing and much more.
