Lyrical Revolt II draws youth, supports political prisoners

On Sept. 13, dozens of youth and students crowded Carlito’s Café in New York’s Spanish Harlem for three hours of

fierce spoken word and hip hop.

The event, Lyrical Revolt II, was organized by the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation. It helped bring over 20 young revolutionary artists to the mic, including Rebel Diaz, Props, Golden Child, Brother Earl, Rain Maker and many more.

Lyrical Revolt II was hosted by the writer and Osiris Flores, both New York PSL organizers. It was dedicated to the Cuban Five and all political prisoners of the repressive capitalist system. Respects also were paid to the late rapper Tupac Shakur, who was shot dead 10 years ago on Sept. 13.

The performer Spirit Child closed out the show a little after midnight with the entire crowd chanting, “Freedom for political soldiers,” in support of all political prisoners.

The success of the event was due to the efforts and diligence of PSL comrades and friends and ANSWER volunteers and supporters, all of whom kept the energy high the entire night.

The PSL is looking to hold Lyrical Revolt more frequently in the near future, but you do not have to wait until the next open mic to see us again. We have many things coming up, including local branch meetings every other week, monthly film showings and a march in Washington, D.C. to support the Cuban Five.

Until the next time, unite and fight!
