universities including financial assistance to students, school funding and faculty salaries.


Occupations of deans’ offices and other school buildings were among the actions carried out in at least eight states and the capital. Students at the University of Brasília joined faculty members on strike in a demonstration outside the Planning Ministry, the body responsible for salary negotiations.


The mobilizations also expressed solidarity with students who have been occupying the University of São Paulo since May 3 to protest attacks against the autonomy of universities, budget cuts and other issues. Thousands of USP students faced riot police on May 31 as they were trying to reach the state government palace for a peaceful demonstration.
