Kosovo in the crosshairs

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently said that Kosovo will get its independence “one way or another,”

reiterating U.S. resolve to chip away another piece from the former Yugoslavia.


Facing a Russian veto, Washington and its EU supporters have given up pushing a U.N. Security Council resolution to tear away Kosovo from Serbia. They are now exploring options outside the Security Council where Russia may have less leverage. Rice’s strong wording implies that military intervention is not off the table.


The United States wishes Kosovo to be “independent” of any obstacles to U.S. imperialist penetration—in this case, Russia’s ally Serbia. The United States government has spearheaded wars and other efforts to shred the former socialist Yugoslavia into smaller states, where imperialist penetration has wrecked social gains and living conditions.
