Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir had resisted the proposed U.N. troops, which he correctly labeled a neocolonial force. However, Sudan, under tremendous imperialist pressure, eventually agreed in June to a joint African Union-U.N. deployment.
The so-called “genocide” in the Darfur region pales in comparison to the impact of U.S. aggression against Iraq. While figures of 200,000 dead and more than 2 million displaced are commonly thrown around for Sudan, well over 2 million Iraqis have died in the 17 years of U.S.-imposed war and sanctions. Four million have been made refugees since the 2003 invasion alone.
