happened on Sept. 22.

The venue was packed to capacity; the energy from the crowd was positive and live. With a line-up as diverse as Mr. Free from Santa Cruz to Doba Doza from Watsonville, “I’m loving your energy Bay Area” was a comment heard from many MC’s on stage.

Counter Pulse, located in San Francisco’s Soma district, was the venue. Images and video footage were projected on the background wall. Flags representing countries under occupation as well as revolutionary countries, and a classic image of Che behind the stage all set the revolutionary tone.   

Lyrical Revolt began in Harlem, N.Y. as an initiative of the ANSWER Coalition. The full lineup of the Bay Area event included music and spoken word by DJ Kalaquitas, Play & Jedi, Kopowang Kulapo, Bambu of Native Guns, D-Scott, Elliot, Matt & Shimmy, Doba Doza, Cov Records Crew, Para La Gente, Brown Buffalo, Mr. Free and Redencion. Some of the groups represented at the event were KMB Pro-People Youth, the Brown Berets, De-Bug, the General Union of Palestine Students, Coalicion Primo de Mayo, the Party for Socialism and Liberation and Youth & Student ANSWER.

Lyrical Revolt represented a coming together of powerful young artists and activists representing important political struggles. This event fomented solidarity and unity within the struggle for justice. It emphasized the urgent call to action on Oct. 27 for a march and rally against the imperialist war in Iraq.

Chris Banks of the Party for Socialism and Liberation spoke about the action-oriented character of the event. He emphasized that everyone there should be involved in the organized struggle for justice.
