FARC leader calls Uribe’s bluff

Nayibe “Sonia” Rojas has said that the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia should not let her release or Ricardo Palmera’s become an obstacle to reaching an agreement with the Colombian government.

The Uribe government has used the FARC’s demand for the return of the two political prisoners to Colombia as a pretext to preempt an agreement with the group. By suggesting that the demand be dropped, Sonia is calling Uribe’s bluff.

“Since the president doesn’t want it, there won’t be a humanitarian agreement,” Sonia told visiting Colombian Sen. Piedad Cordoba, indicating Uribe will reject any accord regardless.

A jury deadlocked 7-5 in favor of Palmera’s acquittal on bogus drug trafficking charges on Oct. 4, but the U.S. government has indicated it may pursue a new trial.
