Ugandans protest visit by Queen Elizabeth

Ugandans had to fight against the police with rocks in order to demonstrate against the visit of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth with President Yoweri Museveni.

The police, armed with batons, attacked demonstrators as they tried to move toward the center of the city. Several injuries were reported. The protesters had been confined to the suburbs in an effort to marginalize the demonstration.

“Uganda now is praised for sending troops to Somalia, for which Britain and other countries will be willing to overlook the gross violations,” said opposition leader Kizza Besigye.

Uganda is hosting the biennial 53-nation Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Except for Mozambique and Britain itself, the Commonwealth is composed primarily of former British colonies.
