Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki described the political climate in the continent as a good opportunity, highlighting “independence in decision-making, emergence of progressive governments, the idea of political and collective security cooperation, campaign against neoliberalism … and witnessing anti-U.S. approaches in the region.”

Iran will open an embassy in Bolivia, which Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mohammad-Ali Hosseini described as part of Iran’s comprehensive effort to expand its Latin American relations.

Venezuela and Iran—both in the crosshairs of the U.S. empire—have already signed a number of cooperation agreements. Tehran’s orientation toward Latin America could help strengthen the international anti-imperialist front.
