San Francisco Chinese community protests against CNN

Members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation marched with thousands of demonstrators from San Francisco’s Portsmouth Square in Chinatown to the CNN office in the Financial District on April 26. Participants protested the television network’s racist attacks against the Chinese people and government.

PSL members distributed literature and carried a banner, which read, “We stand with China—Stop the US-CIA plots” in English and Chinese. The literature and banner were well received by the marchers.

CNN commentator Jack Cafferty recently made extremely racist remarks while discussing China on the show The Strategy Room. Cafferty stated: “We continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export … jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we’re buying from Wal-Mart. … I think they’re basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they’ve been for the last 50 years.”

Cafferty’s brand of racism is condoned and encouraged by the corporate media, which seeks to assist Washington in its efforts to vilify and eventually overthrow the Chinese government. As revolutionaries and progressives living in an imperialist country, we must stand up against such attacks from the ruling class and the corporate media.

Many demonstrators were pleased to see non-Chinese people participating in the demonstration and acknowledged the PSL’s presence there many times. It was a day of genuine internationalism and solidarity.
