Mass rally celebrates California same-sex marriage ruling

Over 1,000 people attended a rally in West Hollywood on May 15 to celebrate the California Supreme Court ruling that struck down the ban on same-sex marriage. The mood of the crowd was excited and determined to defend the victory. People chanted and held signs that read, “Equality for all; down with anti-LGBT bigotry.”

The event was organized by the city of West Hollywood and attended by many LGBT rights and progressive organizations such as Marriage Equality California, Lambda Legal Center, the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation, among others.

Lucilla Esguerra, the PSL candidate for California State Assembly, District 48, attended the rally and passed out a solidarity statement from her campaign. The crowd was highly responsive to Esguerra’s campaign.

From the stage, speakers warned of the looming right-wing attacks against the court’s ruling. Reactionary forces are at work trying to put a measure on the November ballot proposing an amendment banning same sex marriage. The May 15 rally was a battle cry against these right-wing forces.

The PSL’s local and presidential campaigns celebrate California’s same sex victory, and vow to continue the struggle not only for full marriage rights for all same-sex couples but against all manifestations of bigotry.
