Cuba creates first ever lung cancer vaccine

On June 24, Cuban authorities certified CimaVax EGF, a therapeutic vaccine that will improve the quality of life for patients with advanced lung cancer.

CimaVax EGF is the first vaccine of its kind to be registered in the world. Over 1 million people die each year from lung cancer.

Unlike chemotherapy, the prevalent treatment for cancer, the new vaccine has few side effects. Proteins in the vaccine only attack cancer cells, slowing the growth rate of tumors. The vaccine has been shown to build patients’ immune systems, prolong life from four to six months and reduce symptoms such as shortness of breath and appetite loss.

Patients from all over the world will be able to travel to Cuba for CimaVax EGF treatment. Because of the U.S. embargo against Cuba, people living in the U.S. will not be able to take advantage of this great medical advancement.
