Dallas teachers protest mass layoffs

Hundreds of teachers surrounded the Dallas Independent School District Building in Texas as the school board voted to fire workers to cut costs.

Public education, already underfunded as it is, has been hit hard by the economic crisis. Facing an $84 million deficit, the school board voted 5 to 2 with one abstention in favor of the job cuts.

Approximately 1,100 teachers and staff workers could be fired, severely affecting public education in Dallas. Students expressed concern that the drastic cutbacks will affect their education as class sizes increase and stress mounts.

Kimberley Stephens, who teaches at George Washington Carver Elementary School, said: “They don’t care about us. If they did, they would have found another way to clean up this mess.”
