Hate crime against Muslim child sparks backlash in Dayton, Ohio

Dayton, Ohio, Police Chief Richard Biehl has said with a straight face that a 10-year-old Muslim girl who was attacked with a chemical irritant was not a victim of a hate crime.

The girl was watching over children at the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton when two men sprayed something through the open window. She immediately felt a burning sensation on her face and became sick to her stomach. She and several others at the mosque received treatment.

Several local residents had recently received an inflammatory anti-Muslim DVD in the mail. More than 70 newspapers, including the Dayton Daily News, received advertising money and widely distributed the DVD.

In an encouraging sign against the bigoted propaganda campaign, there has been a backlash of protests against newspapers that distributed the hateful DVD.
