On Sunday, Nov. 23, Palestine solidarity activists gathered to protest outside a concert presented by the Seattle Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. The concert featured the IDF Orchestral Ensemble and included a presentation by an IDF combat officer.

The purpose of the concert was to garner financial and moral support for the racist IDF, which is responsible for the military atrocities carried out against the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation.

The Palestine solidarity community in Seattle did not let this outrage pass without a protest. On short notice, over 50 activists came out to a protest initiated by Voices of Palestine. Groups present included Palestine Solidarity Committee, Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voices for Peace, the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) and others.

For the protesters of Jewish descent in the crowd, it was particularly offensive that the concert was being held at the Temple De Hersch Sinai synagogue, perpetuating the false identification of the racist ideology of Zionism with the Jewish religion and people.

The situation in Gaza has been dire in recent weeks due to a total blockade imposed by Israel, which continues to deprive the civilian population of food and medicine. Israeli Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai announced on Nov. 29 that Israel is getting closer to a wide-scale military operation in Gaza, which is certain to bring even greater suffering to the local Palestinian population.
