Support Builds for Republic Workers Sit-in
On Friday, Dec. 5, 300 United Electrical Workers at Republic Windows and Doors took action and began a sit-in at their work place. Republic illegally closed the plant with only three days notice. For five days now the workers have occupied the plant, demanding that the company’s biggest investor, Bank of America, pay the workers the back pay, severance, and accumulated vacation pay they are legally entitled. The workers are owed over $1.2 million in unpaid wages.

Today, Tuesday, Dec. 9, despite snowy and windy conditions, hundreds of workers and students visited the Republic workers to offer solidarity and support. The workers’ spirits are high and their supporters have been working around the clock to donate food and other items in order to sustain the workers. Apolinar Cabrera, a worker at the plant, said, “We will win because we are united. We will not leave until our demands have been met.”

The ANSWER Coalition is joining with the workers, the union and community organizations to get as many people as possible out to the rally tomorrow.

The Republic workers are mostly Latino immigrants and African-American. By standing up to Wall Street and one of the most powerful corporations in the world, they are taking a courageous stand for all working people in a time of growing suffering and hardship and greater corporate attacks. Let’s do all we can to build support for this important struggle.
