Washington to spend billions on military bases in Afghanistan

The U.S. Army has been given $1.3 billion for related projects to begin in Afghanistan this year, according to Col. Thomas E. O’Donovan, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Afghanistan District. The money is in addition to the $1.1 billion in construction projects already underway in U.S.-occupied Afghanistan.

The expansion plans include new military bases, barracks, military training facilities, housing for an additional three U.S. combat brigades and increased Afghan security forces.

While thousands of workers in the United States are losing their jobs and homes, the occupation construction plans in Afghanistan could total $4 billion this year alone.

The massive spending bill and the fact that the United States plans to send an additional 30,000 troops are further evidence that the Pentagon has no intention to leave Afghanistan anytime soon.

President-elect Barak Obama has said over and over that the U.S. government must escalate the war in Afghanistan, giving his full support to the troop increase.
