Department of Justice drops charges against AIPAC lobbyists

On May 1, the Department of Justice dropped espionage charges against two former officials of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The case reveals the nature of the relationship between the Israeli lobby and the federal government. The officials, Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman, had been charged with trafficking information from a Pentagon analyst to Israeli government officials.

During the proceedings, Rosen and Weissman explained that that their activities were part of routine U.S. government information exchange on Israel and the Middle East. They traded facts and strategies with the full awareness of both parties and, at times, arbitrated decision-making between U.S. and Israeli officials

Israel could not exist without the support of the United States. Israel receives indispensable military, economic and diplomatic support from Washington because it serves the interests of U.S. imperialism in the Middle East. The Israeli lobby in the United States acts as a mouthpiece for the interests of imperialist domination in Palestine and the Middle East. It serves not only to perpetuate the lies about Israel’s “democracy” but as a tool to exchange information between the U.S. and Israeli governments.
