Overturn Prop. 8! Marriage equality now!

The PSL statement below was issued immediately following the announcement of the California Supreme Court ruling upholding the bigoted Proposition 8. Please check back for updates.

The decision of the California Supreme Court to uphold Prop. 8 is an outrage. No tiny, elite body of seven wealthy men and women should be able to decide the rights of millions of LGBT people who suffer systematic discrimination.

Let’s be clear: with Prop. 8, the people have not spoken. The rich, right-wing religious institutions and other homophobes have tried to push an entire community back into the closet.

Despite these temporary setbacks, we can fight back and win! LGBT and straight people showed this when we marched in the streets after Prop. 8 passed. We demanded then what we demand today—equal marriage rights and an end to discrimination. From Silver Lake to West Hollywood; from Iowa to Connecticut, people are rising up against right-wing attacks on the LGBT community.

Civil Rights are non-negotiable! Desegregation and women’s suffrage were both products of grassroots civil rights movements directed against the system of discrimination, not products of a popular vote. Prop. 8 will only be overturned through mass opposition in the streets.

Reactionary forces want to keep us divided, but we need unity more than ever. Our struggle is against systemic LGBT discrimination! We will advance the struggle for LGBT liberation by continuing to create a unified civil rights movement. Get involved!
