Israel’s popularity among U.S. population plummets

According to a June 2009 poll, there has been a record drop in the number of people in the United States who believe that Israel wants to achieve “peace” with Palestine and agree with unconditional U.S. support of Israel.

The poll asked how committed the Israeli government is to “reaching a peace agreement with the Palestinians?” Out of 800 registered voters polled, only 46 percent supported Israel—a 20 percent drop from nine months ago— while 39 percent did not.

When asked whether the United States should support Israel, only 44 percent said yes compared with 71 percent in March 2008.

A pro-Israel lobbying group, The Israel Project, conducted the poll but, due to the outcome, had not intended to release the results to the public. The results, however, were leaked to the media.

The worldwide condemnation and mass street protests against Israel’s barbaric invasion of Gaza in January have greatly bolstered support for the Palestinian struggle against apartheid and occupation.
