Oceans polluted by ‘plastic soup’

Recent releases from non-profit scientific organizations
that study marine life have discovered that the Indian Ocean is covered by a
thin layer of “plastic soup.”  The
scientific research teams discovered plastic in all 12 samples they took from
across the ocean.

It has been long established that garbage is present in the
North Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean gyres, which are powerful rotating
currents in the world’s oceans. This discovery expands scientists’ knowledge of
plastic pollution of oceans.

“If you stand on island beaches and mainland
coastlines, you can watch the plastic coming to you. That’s where gyre clean up
makes the most sense,” Marcus Eriksen, one of the researchers in the study
says, “but we need to stop the flow of plastic into the ocean.”

Capitalist plunder of the environment is responsible for the
pollution of the oceans. Reckless dumping into the oceans will continue to
occur so long as capitalism is the dominant means of production.
