Once again: house burns while fire department watches

In a scene reminiscent of one last year, Tennessee firefighters stood by and watched as a family’s home burned to the ground. After being notified the mobile home was on fire, the fire department showed up, and promptly did nothing.

The owners of the home were flabbergasted. Family member Vicki Bell told a local news station, “In an emergency, the first thing you think of, ‘Call 9-1-1.'” But in this town, that would not help. In South Fulton County, if you fail to pay a $75 “subscription fee,” then you will lose everything, as firefighters are forbidden to take action.

The mayor of South Fulton tried to defend this inhumane policy by saying that no one would pay if they put out non-subscribers’ fires. No person’s home should burn to the ground because of an unpaid annual fee as available resources and personnel sit by. We need a system that puts people first, that provides what every human deserves. We need socialism.
