Yesterday
morning, in the Casa de Alba in Havana, the call “For Peace and
Against Foreign Intervention in Libya,” was announced. The text
has been signed initially by more than 260 personalities from 35
countries. Among the notable signers are István Mészáros,
Alfonso Sastre and Pablo González Casanova. Representing Cuban
intellectuals who backed this initiative of the In Defense of
Humanity network are Eduardo Torres Cuevas, recipient of the National
Prize of Social Sciences, creators Luis Morlote Rivas, audiovisual
artist; and Jaime Gómez Triana, theater; who spoke with the press.

The text of
the Call, which was announced simultaneously in Caracas, Buenos Aires
and Havana, is the following:

For
peace and against foreign intervention in Libya

In the last
two months a wave of people’s protests has shaken vast regions of the
Arab world, in the Middle East and north Africa.

The just
indignation of the oppressed has lead to revolutionary changes, which
the world hegemonists are perfidiously and opportunistically trying
to manipulate. The imperialist interference has been particularly
exposed with respect to the complex circumstances which Libya is
experiencing. The large media corporations are competing with each
other to legitimize the already announced occupation.

We
intellectuals, artists and social activists of the Network in Defense
of Humanity declare that the delicate internal situation that the
Libyan people are living today should be resolved peacefully, with
the strictest respect for their self-determination, without foreign
interference and the integrity of their territory guaranteed.

We support
the initiative of peace and unity by the Political Council of
ALBA-TCP, of creating an “International Humanitarian Commission
for Peace and Libya’s Integrity,” proposed by the President of
the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez.

We
repudiate the mobilization of NATO troops and the interventionist
pronouncements of the U.S. government and armed forces.

We
solidarize with the Libyan people, and are confident that they are
the bearers of the solutions that will contribute to building
stability and peace in that north African country.
