Calling for the removal of Yemeni
President Ali Abdullah Saleh, thousands of peaceful female protesters
marched on Taiz, Yemen on April 3. Despite their chants of “peaceful,
peaceful,” the police attacked the women with sticks, causing male
protesters to clash with the police in response. The police fired on
the protesters, shooting three men and injuring over 200 more with
tear gas. Military tanks and vehicles prevented other protesters from
marching into Taiz.
In power for over 30 years, Saleh is
the head of a corrupt, U.S.-supported government in the poorest Arab
country. Protesters have been camping in the main streets of major
Yemeni cities for several weeks to demand major reforms and the
removal of Saleh. The government has killed over 100 demonstrators
in an effort to crackdown on the protests.
While the United States attacks Libya
under the guise of humanitarianism, it remains apathetic towards the
plight of people suffering under its client regimes.
