Activists and supporters of the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism) filled a Harlem bar on Feb. 23 to enjoy another night of spoken word, hip-hop and revolutionary art. The event was the 7th such Lyrical Revolt in New York City. As a way to salute Black History Month, the Lyrical Revolt hosts called out the names of Black revolutionaries throughout the night and the crowd responded, “Presente!” The crowd, numbering about 100, also participated in call-and-response chants such as “Free, Free Palestine!”

The event featured Hasan Salaam and NYOIL, well-known emcees who promote revolutionary struggle as well as education in their lyrics. Also featured was songstress L.E.G.A.C.Y. who provided the evening with soulful sounds and empowering lyrics. Also blessing the mic was the very talented Read Necks Poetry Squad and Division X. Dozens of other talented performers and poets signed up in the open-mic session.

Lyrical Revolt’s success in New York has inspired other ANSWER offices throughout the country to organize their own Lyrical Revolt. The event has lived up to its name, providing a steady flow of progressive and revolutionary artists who use their cultural expressions as a way to inspire political activity and spark political consciousness.

Lyrical Revolt is scheduled for every 3 months. Stay in touch and on the lookout for information on how to attend or participate in the next one.
