Scottish workers bring public service industry to a standstill

More than 150,000 workers participated in a 24-hour walk-out across Scotland on Sept 24. Hundreds of schools, libraries, day care centers and museums were among the many businesses that were shut down.

The militant action is one in a series of strikes and walk-outs spearheaded by three unions: Unite, Unison and GMB.

Workers have rejected a proposed 2.5 percent pay increase over three years by Cosla, an umbrella organization representing Scotland’s councils. The unions have exposed the proposed “raise” as a pay cut once inflation is taken into account and have pledged to continue with actions until a new agreement is reached.

Jackson Cullinane of Unite explained, “With inflation rising our members are struggling to make their low wages stretch any further. The employers’ hard-hearted stance has only exacerbated an already strained situation and strengthened the resolve of our members.”
